Steps for U.S. Citizens Moving to Portugal: A Simple Guide
Moving from the U.S. to Portugal may seem intimidating at first, but the process is often simpler than people think. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the journey efficiently and smoothly:
1. Apply for a Portuguese Visa
U.S. citizens will need a valid visa to live in Portugal, as the country is outside the EU and Switzerland. Below are some of the most common visa options:
Type of Visa | Who is it for? | Requirements |
---|---|---|
D1 Visa | Americans with a job offer from a Portuguese company | – Employment contract– Proof of job qualifications |
D2 Visa | Entrepreneurs and freelancers | – Business plan or proof of freelance work– Proof of financial means– Portuguese tax number |
D7 Visa | Americans with proven passive income (mainly retirees) | – Proof of regular passive income– Proof of accommodation– Health insurance |
Student Visa | Americans who want to study in Portugal | – University acceptance letter– Proof of financial means– Proof of accommodation– Health insurance |
*Golden Visa | Large investors | |
Family Reunification Visa |
Americans with Portuguese family members | – Proof of relationship– Proof of financial means– Health insurance |
Although requirements vary depending on the visa type, the following documents are typically required:
- Completed visa application form
- A valid passport (must be valid for at least six months after applying)
- Proof of financial means
- Proof of accommodation in Portugal
- A clean background check (FBI "rap sheet")
After collecting the required documents, applications must be made to a Portuguese Consulate in the U.S. Portugal’s consular network covers over 15 cities, from New York to Honolulu.
*Note: The Portuguese Golden Visa has changed, we will direct applicants to specific assistance for that purpose.
2. Obtain a Portuguese Tax Number (NIF)
Before moving to Portugal, it is required to apply for a Portuguese Tax Number (NIF), which is essential for various activities, such as opening a bank account, renting property, and signing contracts. In Portugal, everyone receives an NIF when they file for their first ID, but U.S. citizens must request one themselves.
To obtain an NIF while still in the U.S., candidates need the help of a certified legal representative in Portugal, which U C Homes can perform. The documents required for an NIF application include:
- A valid passport or civil identity document
- A residence permit (if applicable)
- A certified fiscal representative
- Proof of birth (if applying for minors)
Some visa applicants, such as those applying for a D7 Visa, may need an NIF before even submitting their visa application, as it’s required for opening a Portuguese bank account. Keep in mind that obtaining an NIF can be a bit of a lengthy process, so plan ahead!
